How To Troubleshoot The TPMS Acura ILX, 2018

TPMS Indicator, Acura ILX 2018

Acura ILX 2018 has a low tire pressure/TPMS indicator.

Low Tire Pressure/TPMS Indicator Acura ILX 2018

If the system detects low tire pressure in any of the four tires, the low tire pressure/TPMS indicator comes on. If a problem in the system is detected, the low tire pressure/TPMS indicator comes on after blinking for about 75 seconds.

If the system is OK, the low tire pressure/TPMS indicator in you 2018 Acura ILX should come on when you turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and then goes off 2 seconds later. If it does not, there is a problem with the system.

TPMS Related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) in Acura ILX 2018

DTC C1821-78, C1822-78, C1823-78, C1824-78

If the system detects low tire pressure in any of the four tires, the low tire pressure/TPMS indicator in 2018 Acura ILX comes on as well as the message indicator, and CHECK TIRE PRESSURE message on the MID is displayed, and the TPMS control unit sets one or more of these codes: DTC C1821-78, C1822-78, C1823-78, C1824-78. When the tire pressure returns to normal, and the TPMS control unit receives the normal pressure signal from the tire pressure sensor, the TPMS control unit turns off the indicators.

Tire Pressure Changing by Temperature, Acura ILX 2018

Tire pressures increases slightly as the temperature in the tires rises during driving. Pressures can also increase or decrease slightly with changes in outside air temperature. A temperature change of about 18 °F (10 °C) changes tire pressure by about 10 kPa (0.10 kgf/cm 2, 1.5 psi). If the temperature drops, tire pressure could decrease enough to turn on the low tire pressure/TPMS indicator, but later, the tire temperature could increase enough to turn indicator off. To resolve a complaint of such intermittent indications, confirm and clear the stored DTC(s) and check the tire pressures.

Problems That Are Not System Faults Causing TPMS Warnings In Acura ILX 2018

Tire Sealant

Fluid sealant used to repair a puncture tire can damage the tire pressure sensor mounted on each wheel. Although the system is normal, the damage can prevent it from detecting the correct tire pressure, setting a DTC C1821-78, C1822-78, C1823-78, or C1824-78. If the vehicle has a genuine Honda tire repair kit, use the enclosed fluid sealant. However, make sure to follow the procedure listed in the Service Manual to clean the sensor and conduct the operation test.

Cold Weather

The output from the lithium battery in each TPMS in your 2018 Acura ILX may drop in extremely cold conditions (-4 °F (-20 °C) or colder). Although the system is normal, the TPMS control unit may set a DTC for low battery voltage (DTC C1801-92, C1802-92, C1803-97, C1804-92).

Non-TPMS Type Wheels (Including Spare Tire)

Vehicles equipped with TPMS must use wheels made for the system. Every TPMS type wheel has an exclusive mark; do not use any other type of wheel. When a flat tire is replaced with the spare tire, a CHECK TPMS message is displayed on the MID (DTC C1801-87, C1802-87, C1803- 87 or C1804-87) because the system is no longer receiving the signal from the flat tire's transmitter. This is not a problem with the spare tire.

How a TPMS Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is Set in A 2018 Acura ILX

  • When the system detects a problem, the TPMS control unit sets a code, but shifts to fail-safe mode, and does not alert the driver of low tire pressures.
  • If the TPMS control unit loses power or fails, the low tire pressure/TPMS indicator (starts blinking) comes on, but no DTCs are set.
  • The memory can hold all the DTCs that could possibly be set. However, when the same DTCs are detected more than once, the most recent one overwrites the previous one, so only the latest DTC of each type is stored.
  • DTCs are indicated in ascending order, not in the order they occurred.
  • Set DTCs are stored in the EEPROM (nonvolatile memory), and cannot be cleared by disconnecting the 12 volt battery. To clear a DTC, connect the HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) to the data link connector (DLC), and follow the screen prompts.

How to Troubleshoot The TPMS Related DTCs in 2018 Acura ILX

DTC troubleshooting procedures assume that the cause of the problem is still present and CHECK TPMS or CHECK TIRE PRESSURE message on the MID is still displayed and the low tire pressure/TPMS indicator (starts blinking) is still on. Do not use a troubleshooting procedure unless the system has set the DTC listed for it.

  1. Ask the client to describe the conditions when the indicators came on or blinked, and try to reproduce the same conditions for troubleshooting. Find out if the client checked and/or adjusted tire pressures since the indicator came on.
  2. If an indicator does not come on during the test-drive, check for loose terminals, poor contact due to damaged terminals, etc. before you start troubleshooting.
  3. After troubleshooting, repair and clear the DTCs, and test-drive the vehicle. Make sure no indicators come on.

How to Retrieve DTCs

  1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, and connect the HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.2018 Acura ILX data link connector (DLC) Connector Location
  2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
  3. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the TPMS control unit. If it does not, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.
  4. Follow the prompts on the HDS to display the DTC(s) on the screen. After determining the DTC, refer to the DTC troubleshooting. NOTE: See the HDS Help menu for specific instructions.
  5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

How to Clear DTCs

  1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, and connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.
  2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
  3. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the TPMS control unit. If it does not, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.
  4. Clear the DTC(s) by following the screen prompts on the HDS. NOTE: See the HDS Help menu for specific instructions.
  5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
